There are so many things you can do in your play to encourage early reading. If you incorporate these games, there will be no formal lessons. Reading will be a natural part of your life and your child will learn to read easily and naturally. I will give you some ideas to get your creative juices flowing, although I am sure you will come up with some of your own.
First, when it comes to trying to teach your baby to read you have to understand that it is all about them. You cannot shove the words down their throats. You have to let them choose when they play reading games and when they don't. If they are not showing any interest, then do something else and try again later. After a while they will love your reading times and they will want to do it more often. Second, when you are teaching a baby to read you have to use very large letters because babies do not see as well as they will when they are a little older. I like to use magnetic letters to create new words quickly. If my baby is eating waffles, I will grab the letters and assemble the word while my baby is eating. That way, she is making the connection that there is a word that describes what she is eating, and this is what it looks like. Every time you show your baby a word, you are helping them to make connections. Nothing you do is wasted and no word you show is useless. There is something to learn from every word. Your baby is learning about the patterns of the language with every word you show them. Use video. - There are some great videos available that teach babies to read. This is a fabulous way to get your program started because babies like to watch television. You can see how the words are presented and how your baby responds to the program. It requires no preparation and can be used immediately. It is really easy to branch out to flash cards once you have begun with videos.
