Drunk drivers were responsible for an estimated 11,770 people being killed in traffic accidents in 2008. This totaled nearly 31% of all the traffic related deaths for that year.

However there is even more concern about the numerous lives that have been shattered by these irresponsible accidents. Due to one person's irresponsible decision to drive while under the influence many families have been broken for ever. There is a long list of elderly people being deprived of their grand kids, mothers losing their children forever and children orphaned. The fact of the matter is that these common tragedies are preventable and it is vital that drivers are reminded of their responsibilities to drive safely and consider others. There are organizations out there like MADD that try to reduce drunk driving accidents by petitioning our government for tough standards when it comes to related laws. Organizations like MADD are important in helping reduce needless accidents and deaths. No matter what anyone thinks about drinking alcohol, it seems obvious that nobody would ever want to see someone killed by a drunk driver. So what is the solution? As mentioned above, MADD and other organizations continue to work to make the roads safer. Other solutions can include; advising drivers of the consequences of drunk driving and support groups to help people not to drive when they are drunk. Some responsibility must lie at the door of those who sell alcohol. They should try and keep an eye on their patrons. There are a few businesses that will do this by withholding their customer's keys and making sure that they have an alternative way to get home. Most people will agree that drinking and driving are responsible for many deaths. Annually drunk drivers shatter many lives by being irresponsible. So please do not drink and drive.
